‘Angels & Demons’ flies past ‘Trek’ at box office Tom Hanks flick earns $48 million in debut, far short of ‘Da Vinci’ opening

NEW YORK - “Angels & Demons” took the box office from “Star Trek” by earning $48 million in its first weekend of release.

The haul was far less than the earlier Dan Brown adaptation “The Da Vinci Code” — which earned $77.1 million when in opened in 2006 — but still enough to topple the popular “Star Trek,” according to studio estimates Sunday.

In its second weekend, Paramount Pictures’ “Star Trek” took in $43 million, a strong number after its $75.2 million opening last weekend, excluding its Thursday midnight screenings. The cumulative total for J.J. Abram’s reboot of the sci-fi franchise is $147.6 million.

Sony’s “Angels & Demons” reunites Tom Hanks and director Ron Howard for the sequel to “The Da Vinci Code.” It opened without the benefit of the buzz and controversy that propelled “The Da Vinci Code” to a $753 million worldwide total.

Overseas business was again strong for “Angels & Demons,” which earned $104.3 million internationally. Rory Bruer, president of worldwide distribution for Sony, said the studio expects the film will eventually take in half a billion altogether in theatrical release.

“That chemistry (of Hanks and Howard) worked incredibly well with ’Da Vinci’ and it looks like it’s absolutely headed in that same vein, certainly on a lesser scale,” said Bruer. “We never expected anything to the phenomenon of ‘Da Vinci.”’

Like “The Da Vinci Code,” reviews were not illustrious for “Angels & Demons,” but they were mostly better. Bruer called Brown’s action-packed best-seller “a far more cinematic story” than “Da Vinci.” In it, Hanks again plays Harvard symbolist Robert Langdon who’s trying to prevent a series of murders at the Vatican.
“Sony positioned it well,” said Paul Dergarabedian, box-office analyst for Hollywood.com. “They didn’t try to say, ‘This is going to be “The Da Vinci Code.“’ It was actually quite the contrary. They tried to say this was not ‘Da Vinci Code,’ that it was a different kind of movie.”

“Angels & Demons” was the only new wide-release film of the weekend. Coming in third was “X-Men Originals: Wolverine,” which earned $14.8 million in its third week, bringing its total to $151.1 million. The prequel to the “X-Men” franchise, starring Hugh Jackman as the mutant with metal claws, had a step drop-off in its second week.

On the whole, it was another robust weekend of business at movie theaters, which have been drawing large crowds throughout the recession. Dergarabedian pegs the year-to-date box office at a 16 percent increase over last year.

“We’re headed toward a record breaking summer,” said Dergarabedian. “If you’ve got a blockbuster in the pipeline, you’re very happy about all the strength of the box office right now. Momentum is key in this business.”

That’s good news for the two blockbusters opening next weekend: “Night at the Museum: Battle of the Smithsonian” and “Terminator Salvation.”

Comedy '17 Again' leads pack at U.S. box office

"17 Again," a new comedy starring "tween" heartthrob Zac Efron, led the weekend box office in North America with better-than-expected ticket sales of $24.1 million, distributor Warner Bros. said on Sunday.

The studio had been hoping for an opening in the low $20 million range, and was heartened by initial data showing that the PG-13 movie was playing to a wider audience than the 9-to-12-year-old tweens who made Efron a star in the "High School Musical" franchise.

"We're going to have some legs on this film," said Dan Fellman, president of domestic distribution at the Time Warner Inc unit.

Last weekend's champion, the decidedly tween-oriented "Hannah Montana: The Movie," fell to No. 4 with $12.7 million, taking the 10-day haul for Walt Disney Co's Miley Cyrus vehicle to $56.1 million.

The Russell Crowe thriller "State of Play" opened at No. 2 with a modest $14.1 million. The film was released by Universal Pictures, a unit of General Electric Co's NBC Universal.

DreamWorks Animation SKG Inc's "Monsters vs. Aliens" held steady at No. 3 with $12.9 million, taking its total to $162.7 million after four weekends.

Also new was "Crank: High Voltage," a sequel starring British actor Jason Statham. It opened at No. 6 with just $6.5 million. The film was released by Lionsgate, a unit of Lions Gate Entertainment Corp

Harbhajan promises exciting fare at IPL

Harbhajan Singh has always wanted to slam the bowlers. He has long nurtured a dream of scoring a breezy Test century, a sensational stroke-filled show in a limited-over match, or best, swing a match with his bat in Twenty20 cricket.

He is a bowler who would “love to be acknowledged as a batsman” worthy of making priceless runs when they matter. Most of his batting aspirations are visible at the ‘nets.’

So, when he promises some explosive stuff at the forthcoming Indian Premier League (IPL) in South Africa, Harbhajan needs to be taken ‘seriously.’

He rightly opined on Wednesday that every player assumes a level of “explosive batting” in Twenty20 but added that “I am no less” even as he promised some exciting fare. His aggregate thus far from four T20 international innings is 30 runs.

That he has no regard for batsmen is well known. The sight of a batsman stirs him into raising his game and Harbhajan, with 330 Test wickets to his credit, said that he would like to play the role of a match-winner with greater “consistency” now.

“I want to win more and more matches and I am all charged up for the IPL,” he said.

He had missed the inaugural edition of the IPL following the slapping incident with S. Sreesanth.

“I don’t like to be reminded of that incident time and again. It is a closed chapter. There is no animosity between us,” said Harbhajan, who signed a deal for licensing his brand name at a function, here on Wednesday.

Licence India would now ‘sell’ Harbhajan as a brand ambassador for setting up restaurants, sportswear and cricket academies.

The 29-year-old off-spinner typically dismissed the multiple-captain theory of John Buchanan.

True, the noted Australian coach’s theory was yet to be implemented, but it had not stopped reactions from all possible quarters.

“I don’t care if they employ 11 captains. I wish them luck,” said Harbhajan, known to mock at anything that emanates from an Australian.

On not being able to receive the Padma Shri award at the Rashtrapati Bhavan on Tuesday, Harbhajan pleaded, “I had some important family commitments.”

McCullum replaces Sourav as skipper

New Zealand wicketkeeper-batsman Brendon McCullum has reportedly replaced Sourav Ganguly as captain of the Kolkata Knight Riders for their first match in the upcoming Indian Premier League (IPL) cricket event in South Africa.

Knight Riders’ Australian coach John Buchanan weeks ago had made a furore by announcing his intention to have multiple captains for the Season-2 of IPL.

He was strongly criticised from the Greats like Sunil Gavaskar.

The Bengal star, who led Kolkata Knight Riders in the last season though his team lost 8 of the 14 games they played, has said that as professionals he and his team-mates are entitled to fulfill their responsibilities to the team.

Meanwhile, it’s not clear whether the Knight Riders will have McCullum as the only captain for the entire season or multiple captains will be exercised.

As far as the explosive Kiwi batsman is concerned, he had given a blazing start with knock of 156 against the Bangalore Royal Challengers in the last season, which is still the highest score in a T20 match. Moreover, the team management might have taken his availability for the entire non-stop one month long tournament and hence they are hoping some of that brilliance in the second edition.

But this latest development is sure to raise eyebrows in Kolkata's cricketing circles. Knight Riders will play its first game against Hyderabad Deccan Chargers on April 19th.

Kings XI looking for Final glory

After making it to the semi-finals in the inaugural season, Kings XI Punjab under Yuvraj Singh will aim for nothing less than the title in the second edition of the Indian Premier League (IPL) beginning here Saturday.

They will open their campaign against Delhi Daredevils in Sunday’s double header.

Last year, Kings XI were a low profile team in the league but went about their task efficiently before suffering a batting debacle against Chennai Super Kings in the semi-final.

But this year Kings XI will have plenty to think about as they will miss some of their star performers of last season.

Australian Shaun Marsh, who was the highest run getter, will only be available for the second half of the season as he will be on national duty in UAE against Pakistan.

Also missing in action will be S. Sreesanth, who was involved in the slapgate controversy. Sreesanth took an impressive 19 wickets last year but this time a stress fracture has ruled him out of the tournament.

This will open a window of opportunity for Ranadeb Bose, who moved in after warming the bench for Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) last year. Bose had a good domestic season guiding Bengal to the quarterfinals of the Ranji Trophy this season.

In Sreesanth’s absence, the responsibility will be on left-arm medium pacer Irfan Pathan, who will spearhead the bowling attack.

Kings XI will also be pinning hopes on South African all-rounder Yusuf Abdulla, whose local knowledge of the situation will be an asset for the team.

The focus will also be on Australian fast bowler Brett Lee, who will be using the IPL to come back to the international fold. Lee, who managed just four matches last year, suffered a fracture in his left foot in Melbourne in January and the IPL will mark his comeback.

England’s Ravi Bopara, who was bought in February’s player’s auction, is the latest addition. Bopara is considered as England’s most promising young all-rounder and Kings XI will be hoping some sparks from the Indian origin player.

I will always

I swear to you - I will always be there for you -
There’s nothin’ I won’t do
I promise you - all my life I will live for you - we
Will make it through
Forever - we will be
Together - you and me
Oh n’ when I hold ya - nothin’ can compare
With all of my heart - ya know I’ll always be - right
There
I believe in us - nothin’ else could ever mean so much
You’re the one I trust our time has come - we’re not two
People
Now - we are one - ya you’re second to none
Forever - we will be
Together - a family
The more I get to know ya - nothin’ can compare
With all of my heart - ya know I’ll always be - right
There

Forever - we will be
Together - just you and me
The more I get to know ya - the more I really care
With all of my heart - ya know I’ll always be...
Ya know I really love ya - ya nothin’ can compare
For all of my life - ya know I’ll always be - right
There

Harry Potter’ flies into theaters on July 15 Studio bumps up release date 2 days to get a head start on busy weekend

LOS ANGELES - Harry Potter and his school chums are heading back to class a little sooner than expected.

“Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince” now is opening Wednesday, July 15, two days earlier than its previous release date, Warner Bros. head of distribution Dan Fellman said Tuesday.

That gives the movie a head start on the weekend during what’s shaping up as a highly competitive summer season for Hollywood, which has major franchise films opening virtually every week. “Every day the kids are out of school in summer is just like an extra Saturday,” Fellman said.

Warner Bros. also opened the franchise’s most recent release, “Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix,” on a Wednesday in July 2007.

It’s the second date change for the sixth installment in the adventures of the boy wizard. “Half-Blood Prince” had been scheduled for release last fall until the studio bumped it to this July to take advantage of an open weekend in the busy summer lineup.

The franchise stars Daniel Radcliffe as Harry, with Emma Watson and Rupert Grint as his best pals at Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry.

Best bets: ‘State of Play’ hits theaters

Movies
Can “State of Play” stand up to the fantastic BBC series on which it’s based? Hard to say, but Russell Crowe, Ben Affleck, Rachel McAdams and Helen Mirren step into this story about journalists investigating the murder of a woman who was romantically involved with a congressman. And, hey, if you like it, you can always rent the miniseries. (Opens April 17)

Do you suffer from ADHD? Or maybe you just drink too much Mountain Dew. If so, Jason Statham’s “Crank: High Voltage” is the perfect movie for you. If you saw the first one, you know that there are more quick cuts in this movie than at the sushi bar. In this sequel Statham must give himself electric shocks to stay alive while trying to track down his missing heart. (Opens April 17)

TV
Think your job is tough? Watch just one episode of Discovery Channel's "Deadliest Catch" and you may change your mind. The crab fishermen on "Deadliest Catch" risk their lives daily out on the treacherous seas off the coast of Alaska, and viewers get to settle into their warm living rooms and watch, risk-free. The fifth season starts this week. (April 14, 9 p.m., Discovery.)

A fascinating new five-part series begins this week on PBS. "We Shall Remain: America Through Native Eyes" is an "American Experience" offering, taking a look a look at history from a Native American perspective. The show moves from the arrival of the Mayflower to the siege of Wounded Knee in 1973. (April 13, check local listings for times, PBS)DVD
In his humorous musical number at the Oscars, host Hugh Jackman sang about the various nominated films, and when it came to "The Reader," admitted "'The Reader,' 'The Reader,' I ... didn't see 'The Reader.'" Now Jackman, and the rest of us, have a chance to remedy that via DVD. Kate Winslet picked up the best actress Oscar for her role as a concentration camp guard with a personal secret she believes is worse than her Nazi past. (On DVD April 14)

Music
Unless you don’t own a TV, you have heard the Silversun Pickups. Their song “Lazy Eye” was featured on shows from “CSI” to “One Tree Hill.” The band, who is often compared to the Smashing Pumpkins is back with a new album, “Swoon,” and those songs are probably coming soon to a moody network drama near you. Hear them now, before you forever associate them with a TV cop show. (On sale April 14).

If you watch “Grey’s Anatomy,” you’ve already heard the new single of Canadian indie rock band Metric’s latest album, “Fantasies.” On the band’s web site, singer Emily Haines described the new album by writing, “The function of music in my life is to help me understand what the hell is happening. This new record was about ending the fragmentation of my existence.” (On sale April 14)

Dempsey scores twice in Fulham's win at Man City

LONDON - Clint Dempsey scored twice as Fulham rallied to beat Manchester City 3-1 in the Premier League on Sunday, keeping the London club in contention for European qualification.

The American midfielder began Fulham's comeback five minutes into the second half, scoring to tie the game after Stephen Ireland's goal in the 28th minute. Dickson Etuhu's volley gave Fulham the lead, then Dempsey scored again in the 83rd minute.

The win lifted Fulham up to eight place, just a point behind West Ham in the final European qualification spot."We kept fighting and we got the result we needed and now we are on 43 points," Dempsey said. "It's great to get back-to-back away wins because it's something we haven't been doing. Hopefully we can continue that form and have a strong end to the season and see where we get in the table."

In Sunday's other match, American goalkeepers Brad Friedel and Tim Howard each conceded three goals as Aston Villa tied 3-3 with Everton.

Manchester City put Robinho on the bench against Fulham after a string of lackluster performances from the Brazil striker despite Craig Bellamy and Shaun Wright-Phillips being injured.

Robinho came on in the 64th minute, but the $56 million man added little to the attack.

Everton, which is nine points ahead of Fulham in sixth place, twice threw away two-goal leads at Aston Villa.

Villa captain Gareth Barry salvaged the point with a tying goal on a penalty kick in the 66th minute to keep the team fifth in the league.

Referee Howard Webb awarded the kick after Joleon Lescott's foot inadvertently caught Stilian Petrov's face while he was acrobatically trying to clear the ball.

"It was a harsh decision," Everton manager David Moyes said. "I thought it might have been an indirect free kick because all Joleon has done is put his foot up to try and get the ball."

On Saturday, defending champion Manchester United stayed a point clear of Liverpool with a game in hand by beating Sunderland 2-1 while Liverpool defeated Blackburn 4-0. Third-place Chelsea beat Bolton 4-3 to stay within four points of the leaders.

___

MADRID (AP) — Real Madrid stayed six points behind Spanish leader Barcelona after being Valladolid 2-0 on Sunday.

Raul Gonzalez scored his 15th of the season in the 44th minute after splitting two defenders to direct Gonzalo Higuain's centering pass beyond goalkeeper Sergio Asenjo.

Moments after Pepe appeared to foul Valladolid striker Henok Goitom inside the area, Arjen Robben scored on a quick counterattack in the 82nd minute off Jose Maria "Guti" Gutierrez's long pass.

The Spanish champion, which picked up its 14th win in 16 games under coach Juande Ramos, now has 69 points.

Barcelona has 75 points after beating Recreativo Huelva on Saturday.

Juanma Mata beat goalkeeper Inaki Lafuente in the 88th minute as Valencia won 3-2 against Sporting Gijon to overtake Villarreal for fourth place, the final Champions League qualifying place.

Also on Sunday, it was: Racing Santander 2, Real Betis 3; Mallorca 2, Almeria 0; Osasuna 2, Athletic Bilbao 1; Numancia 0; Espanyol 0.

___

AMSTERDAM (AP) — Luis Suarez had a hat trick, including two on penalty kicks, to help Ajax rout Willem II 7-0 Sunday and keep alive the team's hopes of playing in the Champions League next season.

The win kept Ajax within one point of second-place FC Twente with four matches to go. AZ, which beat NAC Breda 1-0 Friday, leads the league with 76 points.

AZ would win the title for the second time in club history with a home victory against Vitesse Arnhem next Saturday. Twente has 65 points after winning 4-2 against Roda JC on Saturday. Ajax has 64 points.

Veteran striker Roy Makaay scored a hat trick, including a 59th-minute penalty kick, to help Feyenoord defeat Heracles Almelo 5-1.

Viktor Elm scored in the 53rd minute to help SC Heerenveen beat FC Volendam 1-0, and Lasse Nilsson, Civard Sprockel and Ricky van Wolfswinkel scored a goal each to give Vitesse Arnhem a 3-2 win at FC Groningen.

___

PARIS (AP) — Nigeria defender Taye Taiwo scored twice Sunday to help Marseille beat Grenoble 4-1 and maintain the pressure on defending champion Lyon.

Vitorino Hilton and fellow Brazilian Brando added the other two goals as Marseille moved to 61 points after 31 games, two points ahead of Lyon, which hosts Monaco later Sunday and will reclaim the top spot if it wins. Bordeaux is in third place with 59 points.

In Sunday's other game, Paris Saint-Germain was playing away at Lille.

___

FRANKFURT (AP) — Mario Gomez scored in injury time to give Stuttgart a 1-0 victory Sunday over Hamburger SV in the Bundesliga, while Bayer Leverkusen and Werder Bremen tied 1-1.

The loss means Hamburg drops into third place with 51 points, behind defending champion Bayern Munich on goal difference and three points behind leader Wolfsburg.

___

MILAN (AP) — Antonio Floro Flores scored two late goals Sunday for Udinese to beat nine-man Reggina 2-0 in the Serie A.

Floro Flores reached Giovanni Pasquale's cross to score in the 85th minute and added another in injury time by shooting low inside the near post.

The loss leaves Reggina stranded at the bottom of the standings with 20 points, seven from safety with seven rounds remaining.

Like all sports events in Italy over the weekend, the match was preceded by a minute's silence for the victims of the Abruzzo earthquake.

SHIVAM--------ITS OVER LYRICS BY JESSE MCCARTNEY

http://www.azlyrics.com/lyrics/jessemccartney/itsover.html

"It's Over"

We've run out of words we've run out of time
We've run out of reasons really why we together
We both know it's over baby bottom line
It's best we don't even talk at all

Don't call me even if I should cross your mind
Hard enough I don't need to hear your voice on my messages
Let's just call it quits it's probably better
So if I'm not returning your calls it's 'cause

'Cause I'm not comin' back I'm closing the door
I used to be trippin' over missin' you but I'm not anymore
I got the picture phone but baby your picture's gone
Couldn't stand to see your smile every time you dialed

'Cause it's over
Girl you know it's over this time
So when you call I'm pressin' seven
Don't wanna hear your messages messages
I'm tryna erase you from my mind
'Cause it's over
I swear girl it's over this time
So don't keep callin' leavin' messages
Don't wanna know where you been
Baby 'cause it's over

I still wake up every morning quarter to ten
I still eat my cereal right at the kitchen table
I can't even remember how long it's been
No trouble stayin' occupied

Oh I ask about you whenever I come around
I do what I can not to put my business in the streets
Last thing I need's another episode
Keep conversation short and sweet because

'Cause I'm not comin' back I'm closing the door
I used to be trippin' over missin' you but I'm not anymore
I got the picture phone baby your picture's gone
Couldn't stand to see your smile every time you dialed

'Cause it's over
Girl you know it's over this time
So when you call I'm pressin' seven
Don't wanna hear your messages messages
I'm tryna erase you from my mind
'Cause baby it's over
I swear girl it's over this time
So don't keep callin' leavin' messages
Don't wanna know where you been
Baby 'cause it's over

You know that it's over when the burnin'
And the yearnin' inside your heart ain't there anymore
And you know that you're through when she don't do to you
And move you like the way she moved ya before

And you wanna pull her close
But your heart has froze
You kiss her but her eyes don't close
Then she goes out of your heart forever
And it hurts you but you know that it's better

Girl you know it's over
Girl you know it's over this time
So when you call I'm pressin' seven
Don't wanna hear your messages messages
I'm tryna erase you from my mind
'Cause it's over
I swear girl it's over this time
So don't keep callin' leavin' messages
Don't wanna know where you been
Baby 'cause it's over
'Cause it's over
Girl you know it's over this time
So when you call I'm pressin' seven
Don't wanna hear your messages messages
I'm tryna erase you from my mind
'Cause it's over
I swear girl it's over this time
So don't keep callin' leavin' messages
